Meeting Minutes from InspireSeattle Social on September 7, 2013
Wiring the Brain
In the past few years we’ve learned to send sights, sounds, and sensations in
and out of the human brain with neural implants. In animal brains, other
electronic implants have boosted memory and intelligence. We’re approaching the
point where we can network human minds together, wirelessly, and augment their
function. Ramez Naam, author of Nexus and More
Than Human gives a whirlwind audio and video tour of the present and
future of this awesome and slightly scary frontier.
Guest Speaker:
Ramez Naam is a computer scientist and author. He’s the H.G. Wells
Award–winning author of More
Than Human: Embracing the Promise of Biological Enhancement . His
first novel, Nexus—a
story about a nanotechnology that links minds and the struggle to control it—was
published in December 2012. Paramount
has already purchased the movie rights to Nexus. Ramez
spent 13 years at Microsoft, where he led teams working on e-mail, Web browsing,
Internet search, and artificial intelligence. His most recent nonfiction book,
on accelerating innovation to overcome environmental and natural resource
challenges, is The
Infinite Resource: The Power of Ideas on a Finite Planet. He
lives in Seattle.
